Sinusitis

Under normal conditions, sinuses are filled with air, but in sinusitis an inflammation or swelling occurs in the tissue lining the sinuses. When this happens, the sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, which can lead to an overgrowth of bacteria, viruses and fungi leading to an infection. Acute sinusitis is often caused by common cold, resulting from runny, stuffy nose and facial pain. It usually lasts less then 4 weeks. Chronic sinusitis involves more inflammation, which lasts for more then 8 weeks.  Both acute and chronic sinusitis can be caused by viral or bacterial infection, although bacteria is more involved in the chronic state.
